CSU Wheat Variety Testing Harvest

Colorado State University wheat breeding team members are pictured harvesting the CSU wheat variety trial on the Hinkhouse farm west of Burlington. The combine is a specially designed test plot machine that harvests the grain, calculates yield, harvest moisture, and test weight. The combine will collect wheat samples to determine quality characteristics such as protein, mixing, baking and loaf volume by variety. New varieties will have strict criteria to meet before release to farmers. More than 500 wheat varieties are being tested at this site. Kit Carson County continues to be the number 1 wheat producing county in Colorado.
