The Colorado Section of the Society for Range Management (CSSRM) is pleased to announce a five-part webinar series to take place this October titled “Common Ground.” The sessions are free, but pre-registration is required. See www.cssrm.org/webinars for details.
“Rangelands and their management represent a critical nexus of public and private land interests” said CSSRM president Joshua “JT” Tashiro. He continued, “generally associated with ranching, healthy rangeland ecosystems are critical to people, wildlife, agriculture and our watersheds.”
This series kicks off on Tuesday, October 20 at 11 am, with a presentation by Dallas Mount of Ranch Management Consultants on peer-to-peer learning and a systems approach to ranch management. A drought-focused panel discussion featuring Colorado ranchers Nick Trainor (southeast of Denver); Ryan and Ronella Noble (Yuma); and Sarah Bangert (southwest Colorado) will follow.
The second webinar in the series gets underway at 11 am on Thursday, October 22, with a focus on rangeland science, research, and technology. Presentation topics include the Rangelands Analysis Platform (Brady Allred, Univ. of Montana); Collaborative Adaptive Rangeland Management Experiment: Decision Making/Grazing Calculator (Annie Overlin, CSU Extension and Dr. David Augustine, USDA-ARS); and Native Seed Production: Grasses, Forbs, and Shrubs in the Western United States (Don Hijar, Pawnee Buttes Seed, Inc.).
On the evening of Thursday, October 22 at 7 pm, CSSRM will hold its first-ever movie night with a full-length screening of the award-winning documentary, Hanna Ranch. The film is the story of three generations on a family ranch in rural Colorado that centers on visionary holistic rancher, Kirk Hanna, whose fight is carried on by his wife and two daughters. Following the movie, Clay Conry will lead a question and answer panel discussion featuring Maggie Hanna, director/producer Mitch Dickman, and CDA commissioner Kate Greenberg. Prior to the movie showing, commissioner Greenberg will discuss the CDA Mental Health Toolkit.
The series will pick up again on Tuesday, October 27 at 11 am, with a focus on podcasts and websites focused on rangeland stewardship and grazing management. Presenters include: Tip Hudson, Art of Range podcast; Clay Conry, Working Cows podcast; and Kathy Voth, OnPasture website.
The webinar series will conclude on Thursday, October 29, with a keynote address by Dr. Richard Knight: The Radical Center: Building Bridges Between Rural and Urban Communities Over Food and Open Spaces. Dr. Knight’s talk will be followed by the CSSRM Business Meeting.
Interspersed in the series will be CSSRM award honors; virtual tours of the 3R Ranch in Beulah, Colo. and the Poudre Learning Center in Greeley, Colo.; and moderator-lead audience question and answer periods.
