The Colorado State Fair Fiesta Committee voted to make changes to the 2020 Fiesta Day activities in consideration of the COVID-19 public health crisis.
“We are faced with an incredibly difficult decision. We want to keep the spirit of Fiesta Day alive, but need our community to remain safe during this time” said Fair Committee Coordinator Susan Huertas
The committee will move both the 2020 Fiesta Queen Scholarship Pageant and this year’s Fiesta Day activities forward in a virtual capacity. However, the annual Colorado State Fair Fiesta Day Parade will be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Traveling and being in close quarters for bands is prohibited. Social distancing would be difficult to maintain with participants on floats, especially high schools with large student representation. Every year, the parade brings thousands out to line Northern Avenue in Bessemer. Currently, guidelines for outdoor events of this size are not in place and the committee wants to keep the community safe from the impact of COVID-19. However, the committee has plans to launch virtual Fiesta Day content to keep everyone engaged. The Fiesta Queen Scholarship Pageant virtual event will be held on Saturday July 25, 2020 via a streaming platform. Virtual content is also being planned and will air on Fiesta Day, September 6, 2020. More information and details about activities taking place will be announced soon.
“We can still celebrate the energy and spirit of Fiesta Day and crown a Fiesta Day queen, even in these changing times. We have a large pool of applicants for this year’s pageant. One of our major efforts as an organization is granting scholarship money each year to young Latina women to support their educational endeavors. We should not lose sight of that aim, especially during this time.” said Randi Addington, Fiesta Committee Pageant Chair.
Information about the plans will be released on the Fiesta Committee’s website (https://bit.ly/FiestaCommittee), Facebook page @FiestaCommitee. For questions and additional information, contact Susan Huertas at 719-250-8431.
