Winter-Williams Climate Action Plan Passes Committee

Denver, CO – The Colorado Senate Committee on State, Veterans, and Military Affairs voted 3-to-2 to advance HB19-1261, Climate Action Plan to Reduce Pollution, a bill sponsored by Senators Angela Williams (D-Denver) and Faith Winter (D-Westminster) that would establish  greenhouse gas pollution reduction goals for Colorado. The bill now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration.

“Climate change is affecting people in all four corners of our state, and the time to act is now,” said Senator Winter. “This bill is a Colorado solution to address the increased harm we are experiencing due to climate change. Colorado has already been, and will continue to be, a national leader on this issue.”

“This bill sets bold goals to reduce pollution while giving the Air Quality Control Commission the flexibility they need to work with stakeholders, industry leaders, and experts to find the best way to get there,” said Senator Williams. “We do not have to sacrifice our health and our future in order to uphold the strength of our business community. My plan to reduce pollution ensures that we will have an environment for businesses and their patrons to thrive in, both figuratively and literally.”
If passed, HB19-1261 would set a goal of achieving a 26 percent reduction in pollution by 2025, a 50 percent reduction by 2030, and a 90 percent reduction by 2050, relative to 2005 levels. The legislation would make Colorado a national leader in climate change legislation and is a bold step in mitigating the catastrophic risks of this threat.
