House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway “America Needs the Certainty”

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway highlights the wins in the 2018 Farm Bill conference report for rural America and calls on Congress to pass the legislation.

Chairman Conaway’s remarks below:

Rural America will be better off across the board when we get this thing done. You know, five years of depressed commodity prices—a 50 percent decrease in net income—savings are gone, capital is gone, and America needs the certainty—rural America especially.

And so, the farm bill is a piece of lessening that problem. Producers, bankers, creditors across this land will be able to say, “alright the next five years we don’t have to worry about what the farm bill might be, we know what the farm bill is.”

There are victories in this that we can lay claim to. Title I, the safety net, good improvements there. The Conservation Title is going to be better. On the SNAP side, we improve program integrity, which is an important thing.

Over five months of negotiations—now is the time to do it, and I hope to persuade my Republican colleagues that that’s the case.

Once this is all said and done, I will be one happy camper.
